Abstract:

The Steam Deck is Valve's most recent move to support Linux-based gaming.

Not only is the console running Linux, but Valve has been submitting patches upsream to improve hardware support and add features Steam needs.

The Steam Deck is a handheld, all in one, gaming device. PC level hardware in a portable device. Portable access to the Steam library.

The Steam Deck also supports using an external monitor/TV for display and additional controllers.

The Steam Deck is the only major handheld that uses Linux for the base operating system. Even before it was available Valve released hardware breakdown videos. The breakdown helps for hardware repairs and upgrades of the Steam Deck.

With access to Valve's Steam store the Steam Deck gives us access to thousands of video games on a Linux device. Valve is expected to exceed 3 million Steam Decks sold by end of 2023.

The Steam Deck also has a Linux desktop for those who want a handheld embedded Linux device.

Most of the games in the Steam store are proprietary, but there are some Free Software games available as well.
