Our GetTogethers focus on nonprofit systems administration. The format consists of discussions on a theme. The hope is that we learn from each other and use each other as sounding boards. You do NOT need to be a full-time or professional systems administrator to participate. Many people do IT in addition to a bunch of other things at their organization. Some people do IT for nonprofits on the side, or on a voluntary basis. Some people end up with IT in their laps despite not considering themselves "techies". All these people can find refuge in our group. Why devote a group to nonprofit systems administration when other sysadmin groups exist? Nonprofits tend to have different systems constraints than other organizations:
- Low technology budgets (and thus greater reliance on free/cheap hardware and software)
- A reliance on older "hand-me-down" systems
- More hands-on systems administration and less outsourcing
- Alternatively, a lot of reliance on cloud services and very little in-house support
