Tweet ShareIn January, Jam will be showing us the Bulletin Board System (BBS) that he has been developing over the years.
BBSs were what we used in the 80s to connect computers to communities before there was the Internet. Someone like Jam would set up a computer system with BBS software and people in the community would use their modems to connect their home computer to a local BBS to exchange email, message boards, games, etc. Then these BBSs would connect to each other to exchange the email, messages, etc. The BBSs each had their own "shell', and some BBSs standardized. It's good to know that sort of thing is still around and getting updated with things like emoji support!
If there's time, he might also talk about the infrastructure needed to host a BBS, and his experiences, including: connecting local email to GMail, and difficulties upgrading Fedora when you skip over release versions.
