Abstract: The best answer is almost always, "Hire a writer". But when you are working in a team, interest group, or volunteer project, that doesn't always seem like an answer. In the absence of an expert, how can a team capture the information that is essential to running and maintaining the project? What is the essential information, and what is fluff? Who is in charge and does a style guide matter? What do you do if no one wants to be in charge? We know from the GitHub poll that poor documentation in open source projects is a pain point for new and experienced contributors.
