LOCATION: Next to the flagpole in San Mateo Central Park, San Francisco Bay Area, California, USA, 3rd Planet from the sun

ABOUT US: While we welcome novices and beginner-level players, please be mindful of the fact that games are oriented for players at the intermediate level and above. See below for our definition of intermediate/beginner/novice and guidelines for mixed-level play.

We play hard but aren't overly intense about it. We laugh, we high-five, we say "good serve!" even to the team across the net, and we don't give people a hard time for playing less-than-perfectly. We are here to play good volleyball and enjoy the company of good people.

So come join! Shoes are optional. :)

GUIDELINES FOR MIXED-LEVEL PLAY

We are committed to providing a safe and enjoyable volleyball environment for everyone. If your behavior on court is dangerous, disruptive, or offensive, you may be asked to leave.

We sometimes have more players than room on the courts. If you are playing while there are people waiting to play, please take yourself off the court after a maximum of two games, so everybody has a chance to play.

We generally think of players as belonging to one of three categories:

1) Intermediate and Beyond. An intermediate player knows the rules of the game, consistently applies the order of play (bump-set-spike, setter always gets the second hit unless calling "help", etc.), and can hit a ball in the intended direction at least 60% of the time from any position, including serving.

This meetup group is primarily oriented toward players who play at an intermediate level or above. If there is not enough room for everybody to play, players will make room for others to come onto the court after a maximum of 2 games, so everybody has a chance to play.

2) Beginner. A beginner player has a basic understanding of the rules of the game (but may be less familiar with rules that come into play less often), consistently applies the order of play (bump-set-spike, setter always gets the second hit unless calling "help", etc.), and can hit a ball in the intended direction at least 25% of the time from any position, including serving.

Beginners are welcome to play. We will try to have a maximum of one beginner per team, in order to keep the level of play acceptable for all players. If more than one court is set up, one or more courts may be reserved for players who are playing at an intermediate level or above. Beginners should not join games on the court(s). However, beginners will always be welcome on at least one court, and more advanced players will always rotate through the beginner court(s) to help beginners enjoy a higher level of play.

1) Novice. A novice player is anyone who does not (yet!) posses the skills and knowledge of a beginner player.

We've all been novices once, and have grown thanks to the patience and guidance of better players who were willing to play with us and teach us. Novices are welcome to our meetups, but will not play in actual games. More skilled players may be willing to work with novices and help improve their skill and understanding of the game, but this is not the main function of this group.
