Technologies that are difficult to use are less likely to gain wide spread adoption. Tom will share techniques for identifying and removing barriers to technology adoption through user research and design. His talk will include a mix of the current state of user research methods as well as examples that include:
How we leveraged user research to make data easier for scientists to find, download, and use. Usability testing a first generation VR web-browser to better meet the needs of users. Identifying barriers to the adoption of passwordless authentication systems. He’ll also include a handful of tips for conducting your own user research.
Tom Satwicz is Head of Research at Blink UX, a product innovation firm. Through mentorship and project direction he helps client teams gain empathy for their customers, users, and anyone that may encounter their technology, product, or service. He’s particularly interested in creating technologies that will provide a meaningful impact on people’s lives. Tom has worked with a range of organizations from established tech companies like Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon to non-profits like Committee for Children. He is a graduate of the Ph.D. program in Learning Sciences at theUniversity of Washington and was previously a faculty member at the University of Georgia’s College of Education . There he conducted ethnographic studies of how young people learn to use digital media and how technology is integrated into educational settings. In his non-work life, Tom enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, and hanging out in West Seattle.
