Book club: "Uzumaki", Junji Ito
Hosted by Bowie Horror FansTweet Share Share
This month we'll read a horror manga comic, Uzumaki. (Not to be confused with Uzumaki Naruto, which is a different manga.) There are three volumes; we're planning to read all three.
It is not in the PG County library, but you can use interlibrary loan to obtain a copy from the Baltimore, Carroll, or Howard County libraries. (See https://pgcmls.info/website/ill---borrow-from-other-library-system-410 for details.). A film version was made in 2000; I haven't managed to find it on any streaming services or on Youtube.
Plot summary: Kurôzu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but by a pattern: uzumaki, the spiral, the hypnotic secret shape of the world. As the madness spreads, the inhabitants of Kurôzu-cho are pulled ever deeper into a whirlpool from which there is no return!
