Casual meetup of Sydney based OSM mappers, let's meet up and do some humanitarian mapping tasks on HOTOSM!

Everything is subject to change, so let's see if we can get together just casually first ;)

Hi Dion, I've got to be back in Picton for a BBQ at 5 PM. Any chance we could start an hour or two earlier?

    March 19, 2019, 9:23 a.m.

Hey David, I've updated the time to 12:30pm - 2:30pm. Hope that helps :)

    March 19, 2019, 11:50 a.m.

Thanks Dion. That will work well. (Sorry about the double comment! I can't see a way to delete it...) EDIT: Now I can delete and edit!

    March 19, 2019, 9:27 p.m.

As mentioned, anything near the bus line to Wynyard would be great!

    March 20, 2019, 11:03 p.m.

Sorry I just realised I can't make it that date. Hope to make it to another one sometime!

    March 23, 2019, 12:17 p.m.

Ah sorry I thought this was still at 2:30. I wouldn't be able to get there until this afternoon.

    March 23, 2019, 1:24 p.m.

    @Ben Kelley, I don't think it's today. I think it's Saturday the 30th.

Hey everyone! I've updated the location to the HDR offices in North Sydney. It's walking distance from the North Sydney train station. There is swipe card access, so call me at 0432466949 so I can let you in. There won't be catering for this session, so it'll just be really casual. There's a pizza hut so we can order pizza if interested, if not, we can perhaps grab a bite nearby. Basically: 1. Let's say hello :) Introduce our backgrounds and whatnot 2. Maybe have a short mapping session, things we can map: HOTOSM tasks (useful for the world), perhaps importing addresses to NSW (useful for GPS users), tracing buildings (useful for architects), or something else? What do you like mapping? We can all join and help! I'm not a super experienced mapper myself, but we can all learn from each other, and together fill in the map both locally and abroad :) There is guest WiFi and power sockets if you bring a laptop. If you don't bring a laptop, I can sign you into one of the office computers, and JOSM is quick to download.

That sounds good! I generally like to map my immediate local area, followed by surrounding suburbs, places I visit regularly, etc. I also like the sense of detail and completeness the map gets when buildings are mapped. Importing addresses has a great deal of personal value for me, since I deleted Google Maps from my phone! I would be particularly interested in sharing the streamlined conflation method I have developed.

David, it would be great if you could share the streamlined conflation method!

Do we expect more than 3 people to rock up? Any ideas how we can reach more users? Is this a timing issue - as in wrong time of the day - for others to attend?

    March 27, 2019, 4:27 p.m.

I've posted a link to this page in the Slack channel.

    March 27, 2019, 4:54 p.m.

Where is the slack channel? I'm in #australia, but I haven't seen an update since 2018

    March 27, 2019, 5:09 p.m.

@Ben Kelly, can you make this Saturday? I'm also open to postponing to a different date, if we want more people :)

    March 27, 2019, 5:13 p.m.

I couldn't make it at 12:30. I could make it later in the afternoon though. Say after 2pm?

    March 27, 2019, 5:34 p.m.

If we delayed it by 1 week (6th April) and made it 2:30pm, could more people join?

    March 27, 2019, 10:05 p.m.

I can do either, which brings us up to three for each option. If we can get one more person for either timeslot, that will decide it.

    March 27, 2019, 11:14 p.m.

Weekday evenings after work are usually better for me, but just depends on the week for weekends. But don't change things just for me. I just hope people want to run another one sometime increases the chances for others who might want to join in. The past two mapathons I went to in Sydney were mostly all uni students with no exposure to OSM prior, and the focus was on humanitarian mapping, not local OSM. One was run in conjunction with SSSI Young Professionals, https://sssi.org.au/sssi-community/regions/new-south-wales/young-professionals at UNSW. The other run by Engineers Without Borders at USYD.

North Sydney is quite accessible to me, so I am OK with 3 people having an afternoon mapping session together. For David, I realise it's quite a drive up from Picton, so it'd be good to be more than just a couple hours with just 2 other guys. Some type of mapping (such as tracing) can be a bit dull, so it's always more fun in a group I think. It doesn't have to be HOT mapping, I'd like to learn more about how everybody else maps Sydney locally and build up the Sydney map :) If you could spend an afternoon (not just 2 hours) mapping something, and have 2 others help you map that thing, what would it be? If we met up routinely (say once a month) where a minimum of 3 mappers worked on a task, but people could drop in and out, that might help the map come along quite well. In the future, maybe when this is a bit more organised we could organise a formal mapathon event which is publicized and has set tasks and what not.

North Sydney is about two hours on the train for me, but I'm happy to do it occasionally. Once we have a small group, perhaps we will find some more options for hosting, which could be more central for different people. If I were to spend an afternoon mapping, I would probably keep working on the address import. I feel that address data is probably the most useful thing we can add to the NSW map at this stage. We still have over 4000 suburbs to go!

    March 28, 2019, 2:53 p.m.

@David, I would be interested to hear more about this during the meeting :-) It takes me about 1 hour to get down coming from Narrabeen by bus. I also realise that during weekdays it might be better for me (family wise). Would it be OK to bring my son (9) along? Looking ahead it think if would be good to fix one or two dates per month to gather traction? I feel that a regular meeting (with different locations) might find more attention.

    March 28, 2019, 3:27 p.m.

@Sebastian I think with some supervision there are a bunch of tasks a 9 year old could map. Perhaps he could start with tracing footpaths or buildings in iD?

    March 28, 2019, 5:07 p.m.

@David, that might be even fun for him. My thought was not about getting him involved but hey, why not!

    March 29, 2019, 7:14 a.m.

So, should I delay this to next week so that we have an entire afternoon instead of just a couple hours? Or just meet up tomorrow and see how things go?

    March 29, 2019, 2:14 p.m.

I'm happy either way. Just let me know before 9 AM tomorrow.

    March 29, 2019, 6:27 p.m.

OK - unless anybody objects, I'll see you all tomorrow!

    March 29, 2019, 9:30 p.m.

    See you tomorrow!

    March 30, 2019, 11:58 a.m.

I’ll be a little late. Looking forward to meeting you all.
